Buying basic fishing
tackle is like buying a car. Just about any model will provide
you with transportation from one place to another, but some
are better suited to specific tasks - you probably wouldn’t
want to take a Porsche off-roading and your old truck probably
isn’t the best choice for a ride to the opera. Similarly,
most fishing rods, reels, and line will catch fish, but there
are differences and some work better than others in specific
fishing situations.
In this section
we provide an overview of basic tackle and things to consider
when you make a purchase. Because most manufacturers are quite
good at marketing, they continually, come out with new model
numbers and designations so we will attempt to refrain from
mentioning individual models with the assumption that once
you go to a store to purchase a specific one, it may not be
available any longer.
As in other sports,
the advances in fishing equipment have given the fisherman
a better chance to catch fish than ever before. Most rods
today are made from ultra-high modulus graphite. These rods
are light in weight, high in strength, unparalleled in durability
and more sensitive than ever before. You can now get rods
made with titanium, fishing line made with the newest ultra
strong polymers, which are thinner than ever and some are
almost invisible in the water, and reels with computer controls
to eliminate drag.
