Fishing Regulations

It is the responsibility of each fisherman to know and obey the fishing regulations for the state and in many cases the specific river you are fishing that day. Further, many of the regulations are subject to change throughout the year due to fish catch statistics, water levels, ie low flow closures, bait restrictions, and other factors. We all must be stewards of our fisheries and follow the rules if we expect our sport to survive.

Fines for breaking the regulations can be substantial and some even include jail time so it is very important for you to know the rules BEFORE you step on the river. Enforcement officers will not give you a break for arguing "that you didnt know".

DFW Websites - Every state in the country publishes its fishing rules and regulations at its DFW website. Some of these websites publish weekly fishing reports as well and several even let you purchase your fishing license online. Here are a few examples:

Poacher Hotlines - Enforcement of the rules and regulations depends on us as much as it does the police and rangers. As much as we would all like to see sufficient numbers of enforcement personnel on all of our rivers, the reality is that state budgets preclude full coverage. So in many cases, we need to be the eyes and ears of enforcement. If you see someone breaking the law you should report it immediately.
